Trump's visit chance for M'sia to speak up on Gaza - Yadim

Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (Yadim) has urged the government to seize United States President Donald Trump’s visit to Malaysia as an opportunity to state the country’s stance on the Gaza conflict.

Yadim president Hasan Bahrom said while Trump’s past policies had stirred unease among Muslims, Islam teaches the importance of speaking truth to power.

“Islam teaches that speaking the truth in front of a tyrant is the noblest form of jihad,” he said in a statement today.

Hasan stressed that Trump’s presence should not be seen as Malaysia endorsing US foreign policy.

“Trump’s presence in Malaysia is not a form of recognition of America’s foreign policy that defends the oppression of the Zionist regime.

“Instead, if viewed positively, it is an opportunity to state our position against the cruelty and persecution of the Zionist regime towards the people of Gaza,” he said.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had previously announced that Trump would attend the Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur later this month under Malaysia’s chairmanship of the regional bloc.

The announcement has since drawn criticisms and mounting protests from groups opposing Trump’s visit.

‘Diplomacy is not submission’

Hasan, however, rejected claims that engaging with Trump amounts to legitimising oppression or bowing to a superpower.

“Diplomacy is not the same as submission. Malaysia dares to confront, to deliver the people’s voice and the region’s position.

“Trump’s presence, therefore, strengthens Malaysia’s credibility as a bridge for dialogue, but one that is principled and sovereign.

“This approach is in line with Anwar’s aspirations, who emphasises universal humanitarian values, justice, and prudent diplomacy in voicing out for the oppressed,” he said.

Hasan added that despite the controversies surrounding the visit, it could be used strategically to advance humanitarian causes.

“Yadim stresses that the Asean Summit is about the future of this region, not about individuals. Trump’s presence, like other leaders, must be seen as an opportunity to strengthen cooperation, to speak the truth, and to educate the world with the values of dakwah.

“With courage and wisdom, Malaysia can seize this opportunity for the people’s benefit and to elevate the aspirations of Malaysia Madani on the world stage,” Hasan said.
