'Conditional support for Trump's plan why M'sia not invited to Gaza peace talk'

PARLIAMENT | Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has revealed that Malaysia was not invited to the Gaza peace summit held in Egypt yesterday because it gave conditional support to US President Donald Trump's 20-point peace plan.

Speaking at the Dewan Rakyat today, Anwar said the US-organised peace summit only invited countries that fully backed Trump's plan.

"Malaysia was not one of them because we gave conditional support.

"Among the conditions we gave include allowing the return of Palestinians who have been expelled from their country, and several points regarding Palestine's right to exist as a country.

"These conditions are not part of the 20 points. If you read the 20 points, they do not include the issues of Palestinians' rights, their country, and the Zionists’ atrocity and its occupation of the West Bank," he said during Prime Minister's Question Time.

The prime minister was responding to Shahidan Kassim’s (PN-Arau) supplementary questions regarding the Palestine issue.

According to news reports, the peace talk held at a seaside resort in Egypt's Sharm el-Sheikh city was led by the US with Egypt, Qatar and Turkiye as mediating partners.

Leaders from over 20 countries, including Indonesia, India, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Cyprus, were in attendance.

Seeking end to atrocities

Anwar explained that Malaysia supported the 20-point peace plan, albeit on several conditions, as it wanted an end to the genocide and destruction in Gaza.

The situation is dire in Gaza with its people facing famine, he added.

To a question from Aminolhuda Hassan (Harapan-Seri Gading) on sending medical assistance to Gaza, Anwar said he would give Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi a call later today to seek the reopening of its border in Rafah.

"Rather than bringing them (Palestinians) here, it would be better for us to send our experts and assistance through Rafah to help the Palestinians," he said.

Malaysia will also discuss with Japan to expedite efforts to rebuild Gaza, Anwar added.
