Perikatan Nasional MPs have called on the MACC to investigate Shamsul Iskandar Akin after he was accused of receiving benefits worth more than RM600,000 from businessperson Albert Tei.

They also want the graftbusters to probe Shamsul over a support letter he penned last year for six contractors who had wanted to participate in a hospital project.

“In regard to these recent developments, PN MPs urge the MACC to urgently and thoroughly investigate the matter without haste, and to verify these accusations, especially since it involves a (former) aide to the prime minister,” said PN chief whip Takiyuddin Hassan in a statement this morning.

“Otherwise, it would lead to significant implications that could jeopardise all the government’s ongoing initiatives and promises to fight corruption, abuse of power, and money politics,” he added.

The PAS lawmaker also urged everyone involved, whether directly or indirectly, to offer their full cooperation to the MACC, and reminded that all forms of misconduct must be subject to the law, without exception or favouritism.

Yesterday, Tei revealed to Malaysiakini that he had spent RM629,000 on Shamsul after being purportedly assured that he could recoup the money channelled to politicians in Sabah.

Among other things, the businessperson claimed to have paid for renovations, appliances and furnishings for two properties – one in Bangsar and an official residence in Putrajaya.

Tei also furnished Malaysiakini with WhatsApp screenshots from December 2023 in which Shamsul purportedly requested money while travelling abroad.

Later, a video was released in which a woman - purportedly Shamsul’s proxy - alleged that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had given the Malacca PKR chief his blessings to prod Tei into recording secret videos of Sabah politicians discussing alleged bribes linked to the mining licensing graft scandal.

Tei has been on a warpath to take down politicians he gave money to for mineral exploration licences, which he did not end up getting.

Shamsul had resigned as Anwar’s political secretary in anticipation of the allegations.

Last week, the support letter issue also resurfaced in Parliament.

In response, Anwar said he had reprimanded the now-former political secretary. However, Anwar later rejected calls to sack Shamsul.

‘Severe’ allegations

PAS Youth will be mobilising its divisions nationwide to lodge mass police reports against Shamsul.

It described Tei’s accusations as “severe”, especially since it involved the “abuse of power for personal gain”.

“Despite Shamsul resigning from his role as Anwar’s aide, it does not mean he should use it as an easy cop-out from being fully investigated,” it said on Facebook this morning.

Hence, the Islamist party’s youth wing also called for investigations and action against all parties involved, “including those who instructed Shamsul”.

“PAS Youth also supports Anwar’s earlier calls to action in combating the culture of misappropriation, corruption, and abuse of power.

“We urge the authorities to thoroughly investigate these accusations and take stern action, including the prime minister if he is also involved,” it added.
