Durian Tunggal shooting: Gobind presses AG for an update

DAP national chairperson Gobind Singh Deo has called on Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar to provide an immediate and transparent update on investigations into the fatal shootings of three suspected robbers in Durian Tunggal, Malacca.

In a statement today, Gobind (above, left) reminded that it has been about five months since the police shot and killed three men in an oil palm plantation in Durian Tunggal, but there appears to be no definitive action taken against any individuals involved.

“The gravity of this case cannot be overstated. Serious allegations have been made, and evidence, including audio recordings, has been produced to support these claims.

“It is not unreasonable, in the circumstances, for calls for an explanation about the status of investigations in this case.

“This is a matter of public interest. The public has a right to know what actually happened, and the families of the victims are entitled to answers and justice,” the digital minister stressed.

On Nov 24, the police shot dead three men, aged between 24 and 29, after one of them allegedly used a machete to attack a police officer.

Malacca police chief Dzulkhairi Mukhtar at the time defended his team’s actions, alleging that the incident caused a corporal, in his early 30s, to suffer severe injuries to his left arm.

The victims’ families have denied the allegations, prompting the police to form a special task force to investigate the incident.

Reclassified as murder case

On Dec 16, the Attorney-General’s Chambers reclassified the incident as a murder case after examining police reports.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director M Kumar said on Dec 29 last year that the police officers involved have been removed from active duty amid ongoing investigations.

Since then, lawyers for the victim’s families, activists, and several MPs have repeatedly urged authorities to expedite investigations and push for a murder charge.

Yesterday, lawyer Rajesh Nagarajan said they were last informed about three weeks ago that police were still waiting for the post-mortem reports before proceeding with further action.

He also said that police inaction against their officers investigated for the Durian Tunggal murder will strengthen impunity within the force, as evidenced by a separate incident involving a police officer stepping on a man’s head in Kulim, Kedah.
