Johor polls

  • Johor state assembly speaker Puad Zarkashi took to Facebook and urged voters in the Rengit constituency to withhold their support for BN until two longstanding local issues - water supply disruptions and the repeated breaches of the embankment in Kampung Berong Laut - are resolved.

While acknowledging that caretaker Johor menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi regularly visited the area and had a busy schedule, Puad criticised him for failing to prioritise Rengit despite repeated requests, adding Onn was more focused on urban constituencies like Skudai.

On the water supply issue, Puad claimed the appointment of a contractor to build a new water tank had been repeatedly delayed despite funding approval and the site being secured.

On the embankment issue, he said repeated breaches destroyed villagers' oil palm plantations which would take two to three years to recover, adding that only 30 affected families had received compensation while the rest are still waiting.

  • BN welcomed PAS' decision to instruct its members and supporters to vote for the coalition's candidates in constituencies where Perikatan Nasional is not contesting in the Johor polls.

However, BN deputy chairperson Mohamad Hasan said the coalition must win on its own strength rather than relying on support from others.

"In life, we should not depend on others’ sympathy.

“We must build our own strength. If anyone wants to help, Alhamdulillah, and we thank them,” Free Malaysia Today quoted the foreign minister as saying after a campaign event with residents in Simpang Jeram.
