PM meets BN leaders

Leaders of BN component parties and state BN chairmen have been streaming into Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s office today in order to finalise the coalition's list of candidates.

This included MCA president Ong Ka Ting, MIC chief S Samy Vellu, Umno Youth chief Hishammuddin Hussein and Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Mohamad Hasan.

The opposition settles Negeri Sembilan

PAS, PKR and DAP have allocated the eight parliamentary and 36 state seats in Negeri Sembilan among themselves to take on BN one-to-one in the general election.

PAS and PKR have decided to contest in the Malay-majority constituencies and the DAP in the Chinese-majority areas.

PAS and PKR have been allocated three parliamentary seats each and the DAP two. As for the state seats, PAS will field 13 candidates followed by 12 under PKR with 12 and 11 under DAP.

PAS worried about Titiwangsa

PAS candidate for Titiwangsa, Dr Lo'Lo' Mohd Ghazali, has admitted it will be an uphill task for her to win the parliamentary seat, being a BN stronghold, in the March 8 general election.

She attributed this to the women voters who normally remain comfortable with Umno and BN especially those aged 50 and above.

In the 2004 general election, central committee member Dr Lo Lo, contested the Bukit Gantang parliamentary seat in Perak and lost to BN's Tan Lian Hoe by 6,702 votes.

Terengganu BN reveals candidate list

The full list of Terengganu Barisan Nasional candidates as unveiled today by Menteri Besar Idris Jusoh. Eleven faces have been featured as the coalition contests in eight parliamentary and 32 state seats.

Amongst those dropped is Human Resources Deputy Minister Abdul Rahman Bakar who defeated PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang in the Marang parliamentary seat in 2004.

Awang Adek ready to contest in two seats

Deputy Finance Minister Dr Awang Adek Hussin has indicated that he is ready to stand in both parliament and state seats if he is instructed by the Barisan Nasional leadership.

On top of defending his Bachok parliamentary seat, it is rumoured Awang may also stand in the Perupok state seat in preparation to become menteri besar if the BN succeeds in recapturing Kelantan.

Leaders want Mukhriz for Langkawi

The Langkawi BN leaders have voiced their support for Mukhriz Mahathir to contest in the parliamentary seat.

Langkawi Umno division permanent chairperson Johari Bulat said 33 division chiefs signatures have been obtained.

PKR Youth to field 30 young members

PKR Youth chief Shamsul Iskandar said the party will be fielding 30 candidates targetting 12 parliamentary seats and 18 states seats aimed at giving BN a stiff fight.

“We are fielding professional candidates like doctors and lawyers as well as trade unionists and student activists,” he said.
