The parents of Seputeh parliamentarian Teresa Kok were given access to their detained daughter at federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman today.

teresa kok parents meet bukit aman 150908 09 Kok Kim Tong, 74, and his wife Pong Seh Kwan, 71, entered Bukit Aman about 2pm to visit Teresa, who was arrested under the Internal Security Act last Friday night.

Teresa's four-year-old niece, as well as her personal assistant Mandy Ooi, accompanied them into the police headquarters. They had brought food, including mooncakes, books and a Bible for the detained politician.

Some Selangor government documents were also passed via the parents for Teresa to sign in her capacity as a state exco official.

Earlier today, Teresa's parents filed a writ of habeas corpus against the government against her detention.

After the visit, Ooi said Teresa was detained due to her involvement in the azan issue, a matter involving the Selangor Department of Islamic affairs (Jais), and the ‘Jawi’ (road signage) issue.

Ooi disclosed that Teresa was issued a notice yesterday stating that she would be detained an additional 28 days with effect from Sunday.

teresa kok parents meet bukit aman 150908 05 The azan matter relates to accusations that Teresa was spearheading moves to prohibit or lower the volume of calls to prayers at mosques and suraus (community prayer halls) in Kota Damansara, Sri Serdang and Bandar Kinrara.

She has denied the accusations .

The ‘Jawi’ issue relates to her opposition to the Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s move to put up road signs of road and street names in Romanised Malay and the Arabic script (Jawi).

Teresa was among those who had campaigned for "muhibbah" road signs to include Tamil and Chinese characters along with the Romanised Malay. She argued that no many Malaysians understand Jawi.

It is believed, however, that it pertains to rumours - since then denied by the Selangor government - that it was considering to allocate 30 percent of Jais’ budget for the use of religious groups other than Islam.

Teresa has been accused by certain quarters of spearheading that proposal.

“These things (were raised) many, many months ago, but they’re digging these up now,” said Ooi.

‘Counter brainwashing’ move

Asked about Teresa’s condition, her parents and Ooi said she looked very pale and weak due to the “unhygienic” food that has caused her to suffer from diarrhoea. As a consequence, her blood pressure had dropped.

“The food is not what a normal human being should be eating,” said Ooi.

Although she was being interrogated every day, Kok added, his daughter had mentioned that she was being treated well.

“She’s trying to brainwash them (her interrogators),” interjected Ooi with a laugh.

Ooi added that police gave her and Teresa’s family-members a meal of ‘KFC and Secret Recipe cakes’ during their hour-long visit.

Ooi also said Teresa wanted her to concentrate on her suit challenging her detention under the ISA.

“YB Teresa would like to thank all her supporters, said she will continue to fight, and asked us to stay with her,” she added.

Kit Siang said it was”outrageous” of the police to detain Teresa for 28 days, and called for her immediate release.
