The ongoing spat between Pakatan Rakyat leaders over PAS' plans to implement hudud laws is a sign that they are not a viable alternative, said deputy Prime Minsiter Najib Abdul Razak.

"What's happening now is clear. They do not have a common policy. They are only a very loose coalition with the sole intention of toppling the Barisan Nasional government," said Najib at a press conference in Kuala Terengganu today.

PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim reportedly provided PAS with tacit endorsement of its hudud plans at a ceramah on Jan 6 in Kuala Terengganu, adding more fuel to the fire.

DAP strongly opposes PAS' long-standing hudud plans but is currently campaigning in Kuala Terengganu for the Islamic party's candidate Mohd Abdul Wahid Endut.

Vocal MP can't bring development

Najib also dismissed PAS' intentions for the two parties - Umno and PAS - to meet and discuss about the hudud issue.

To a question, Najib said voters in Kuala Terengganu have to choose between a BN MP who can deliver development projects and funding to the state and a vocal opposition MP.

"An opposition MP can make noise in Parliament, but to bring change and obtain funding, it is clear that the Barisan candidate is more effective than the opposition candidate," he said.

Asked if the development projects only benefit a select few, Najib said that oil royalties are now in the hands of the state government and the state government's plans were ‘people friendly'.

"The royalty will be used for the benefit of the people. (In the past), some programmes were adopted for specific reasons, like Monsoon Cup was to promote Terengganu. This was our effort to put Terengganu on the world map," he said.

The by-election on Jan 17 will see BN's Wan Ahmad Farid taking on Mohd Abdul and Independent candidate Azharudin Mamat @ Adam.
