The former New Era College student who left the college's senate chairperson Dr Yap Sin Tian with a bloodied face on Sunday has been arrested by the police.

The case is being investigated under Section 325 of the Penal Code for causing grievous hurt which carries a maximum seven years jail term if found guilty.

He told a press conference that the police expect to wrap up their probe today and have recorded statements from various quarters, including Yap.

Based on initial investigations, Shakaruddin said there is no evidence to suggest that Lim had been instructed by any quarter to assault Yap.

On Sunday, the former student, who holds a diploma in drama studies, had punched Yap in the face during a convocation ceremony, leaving the latter with a fractured cheekbone.

Bears no ill feelings

Yap, who is also the president of Chinese education group Dong Zong, was discharged from the Kajang specialist centre this afternoon.

The educationist said he would leave it to the police to conduct an investigation into the matter before deciding on whether to accept the apology tendered by Lim.

Responding to a question, Yap also said that he bore no ill feelings towards his assailant but stressed that it was a serious matter.

“This is not only my case, as I was representing Dong Zong and the New Era College Council to give a speech.

"The punch had broken the hearts of many Chinese,” he said, describing the incident as shameful.
