The undated resignation letters signed by Perak PKR’s Jamaluddin Mat Radzi (Behrang) and Mohd Osman Jailu (Changkat Jering) are valid, according to Perak DAP chairperson Ngeh Koo Ham.

“The speaker (of the Perak state assembly) accepted (the letters) because (these are) legal documents. The letters are valid and have been signed by them, unless they now say these are forgeries … but when you sign something, you (should) know what it is all about,” he said.

The resignation of the duo is now a fact, he claimed, because the speaker accepted the letters this morning and has informed the Election Committee of the vacated seats.

Ngeh was dismissive of the claim that the letters were signed under duress, pointing out: “They are not little kids, they are not of feeble mind … you are bound by the contents of anything you sign, unless you are totally ignorant of the contents.”

He was speaking to journalists this afternoon, after chairing an emergency meeting at Perak DAP headquarters in Ipoh which all the party’s state assemblypersons and members of parliament attended.

DAP, with PKR and PAS, formed the Pakatan Rakyat coalition after the opposition won five states in an historic general election last March.

State government ‘stable’

Negh also talked about the stability of the state government, saying this is not an issue despite the slim majority held by Pakatan Rakyat since the general election.

“I don’t see any instability. (The state government) is most stable,” he asserted.

Ngeh said by-elections should be held if the PKR duo defect to Barisan Nasional, as has been widely speculated in the media.

“If we lose the by-elections, only then will the question of dissolving the state assembly come in,” he said.

Ngeh ducked questions about the use of undated resignation letters in the DAP.

“Let me check with the headquarters because, during the election, certain documents were signed,” he said.

However, he confirmed that no undated resignation letters had been signed since the formation of the state government in Perak.
