Kedah Barisan Nasional chief Mahdzir Khalid today said former state assemblyperson V Arumugam's claims of being threatened were nothing but excuses to cover up the fact that there were internal problems between PKR and PAS. Mahdzir added that BN has played no part in the matter.

The former menteri besar of Kedah also said he enjoyed a cordial relationship with Arumugam. "If I meet him at any function, we chat. It's normal."

Early this month, Arumugam had lodged a police report claiming that, among others, there was an attempt to kidnap him. He also claimed that he and his officers have received numerous threats .

"All of this is being done in order to force me to leave PKR and move to Barisan Nasional," he had said after lodging the police report.

Apart from the threats, Arumugam had said that he was also approached with lucrative offers to leave PKR.

MIC seat

Mahdzir, however, claimed no threats were made against Arumugam, saying the latter's resignation was a result of problems between him and the sultan of Kedah.

When asked who would compete for the vacant seat in Bukit Selambau, Mahdzir said although a few names have been short listed, a final decision will only be made after discussion with BN component parties.

"This is a MIC seat. We will respect Barisan Nasional's tradition and let it remain a MIC seat," said Mahdzir
