The government has no plan to review the death penalty in the country, said Deputy Internal Security Minister Chia Kwang Chye today.

"At the moment, the death punishment is still within our legal framework," he told a press conference in Parliament lobby.

He said from 1960 up to October this year, 434 convicted criminals have been executed while 172 convicted are still pending for appeals.

"Of the number, 229 were convicted of drug offences, while the others were convicted for murder, arms trafficking and kidnaping," he said.

The deputy minister also disclosed that from last year till July this year, 52 people have been sentenced to death.

"They have not been executed yet as their appeals are pending. Thirty six of them were convicted of drug-related offences while 16 were for murder," he added.
