When guardrails kill
Guardrails by the roadside are supposed to help prevent accidents from getting worse.
But on June 9 last year, a guardrail speared through a bus that had lost its brakes and killed more than a dozen passengers.
Fifteen students died in the accident, of whom 11 were on the side of the bus that was pierced by the guardrail.
Works Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi initially dismissed criticism over the efficacy of the safety structure.
However, a special task force appointed by the Transport Ministry found several things wrong with the guardrail, including improper installation and assembly errors.

NFA for Apandi
Ten years ago, then attorney-general Apandi Ali declared that Najib Abdul Razak had done nothing wrong in the 1MDB scandal and thus there would be no charges against the then prime minister.
Now, it has come to light that police investigations against Apandi over his role in the 1MDB scandal had been declared “no further action”.
The decision was actually made in October 2022 under the then Ismail Sabri Yaakob administration, but it was only revealed this week.
Lawyer Sangeet Kaur Deo wants the government to disclose what police actually probed and whether they were thorough.

Muhyiddin clinging to power
Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin may not have been as magnanimous as he initially let on when he decided to resign as Perikatan Nasional chief.
Purportedly leaked letters indicate that Muhyiddin wants his party - which he still leads - to head a PN presidential council that will make all the decisions in the coalition, while PAS leads a council that will execute them.
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has reportedly rejected the proposal.
Muhyiddin’s proposal came after those aligned with him seemingly failed to put up roadblocks for PAS’ apparent plans to push Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar as the next PN chief, despite not being a party president.
After a PN meeting called by PAS was torpedoed, the Islamist party has, in turn, skipped a meeting for PN party presidents at Muhyiddin’s house.
