THE Central Market in the heart of Kuala Lumpur has long been recognised as a haven for artists and art collectors in the country. Over the past 21 years, the Central Market has earned a name as an international art gallery..

Anyone searching for the works of some of the nation's most famous artists will be able to find them at the Central Market. Not only that, you can even get a portrait of yourself done on the spot by your favourite painter of art.

After 21 years of the re-opening of the Central Market as a cultural centre in 1986, the artists who had made the centre their 'second home' are now household names in the art industry. They had successfully created art works which left vivid impressions as well as an eye-opener of Malaysia's cultural and historical background.

Malaysian artists who have dedicated themselves to making a living from art had also proven to the audience that their paintings are able to achieve the high expectation of art collectors.

21st anniversary

An art exhibition was held in conjunction with the recent re-branding of the Central Market Annexe where artists have been given a new place to pursue their inspiration.

Providing an extra avenue for the artists is the Central Market's way of commemorating its 21st anniversary.

A total of 27 artists are displaying their works at the art exhibition which was officiated by national laureate A Samad Said on March 8.

The artists taking part included Abdul Ghani Ahmad, Agus, Ali Akbar, Anuar Dan, Aris Aziz, Azmi Aris, Azmi S.H, Baim, Charles Low, Dino, Abdul Hadi, Iedet, Ismail Baba, Jack (Abdul Aziz), Jaja, Long Thien Shih, Mohamad Hairul, Nik Zaiton, Hisyam Asmawi, Raja Mohd, Ronnie, Rosli Mohd Don, Suria Suim, Syed Nahar, Syed Noah, Ujang and Yusof Gajah.

If your favourite artist is among them, head over to the Central Market and you may find a painting or two of his on display. The exhibition is open from 10am to 9pm daily till March 25.

Speaking at the opening, a beaming A Samad Said described the artists as truly 'the people's artists' as their paintings had successfully reflected the feelings of Malaysians.

"For instance, people looking for paintings for their living rooms or those keen to get a portrait of their loved ones, the artists are able to live up to their expectation," he said.

He reiterated that the successful achievements of these artists has not only promoted the local art industry but also helped to develop young painters.

Pay them their dues

Samad pointed out that many young artists received their early inspiration from watching these artists at work.

He asserted that it is important to know how to appreciate the effort of these artists who had produced beautiful paintings by reimbursing them fairly for their work because they are not drawing for pleasure.

"Pay what is due to them based on the quality of their paintings and the effort put in while at the same time show appreciation for their work," urged Samad.

He also noted that the artists' unparalleled skills in rendering joyful faces to rustic landscapes have captured the interests of tourists and local visitors to the Central Market.

Samad was glad that the Central Market has earned a name as a cultural centre in Kuala Lumpur, saying that it has helped to promote national arts and heritage as well as providing the opportunity for local artists to showcase their talent and earn a living.
