Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar dies at 92 after contracting Covid-19
Lata Mangeshkar, one of India's biggest cultural icons, and a singer who defined music and melody for generations of her fans has died in Mumbai, several leading Indian media outlets reported on Sunday.
She was 92 and is survived by her four siblings. Mangeshkar was hospitalised on Jan. 11 after she was detected with Covid-19.
Federal minister Nitin Gadkari confirmed the news on Sunday.
Mangeshkar had an extraordinary career spanning over half a century, singing more than 30,000 songs across 36 languages.
But it was her work in Bollywood, India's Hindi film industry, that made her a national icon.
Mangeshkar was born in Indore city, in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, on 28 September 1929.
She began singing in her teens, and in a career spanning 73 years sang more than an estimated 15,000 songs in 36 languages.
Her sister Asha Bhosle, 88, followed a similar career path and is officially acknowledged by the Guinness Book of World Records as the most recorded artist in music history
