The Penang legislative assembly today passed a resolution condemning yesterday's demonstration by a group of Barisan Nasional youth leaders and supporters.
DAP backbencher RSN Rayer (Seri Delima) tabled an emergency motion this morning to condemn the 45-minute protest staged outside the august House.
The resolution was passed after all 29 Pakatan Rakyat assemblypersons voted in favour of the motion while 11 Umno assemblypersons were against it.
BN youth leaders claimed they were expressing dissatisfaction over the incompetency of Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng's administration of the state.
Led by Penang Umno Youth chief Norman Zahalan, the protesters carried banners and placards condemning the state government for failing to resolve issues such as Kampung Buah Pala, Mak Mandin Rumah Hijau and the controversial conversion of a foreshore land status.
An unidentified protester had also stomped and torched a poster of Lim.
Police report lodged
E
arlier today, PKR state youth deputy chief Ahmad Azrizal Tahir lodged a report at the Lebuh Pantai police station calling on the police to probe and nab the culprits behind the demonstration.
In his report, Ahmad Azrizal ( right ) alleged that the demonstrators had made inflammatory statements, hurled racial taunts and their banners and placards were offensive.
He also complained that the protesters wrongly accused the state government of deceiving and lying to the people of Penang.
Newly appointed PKR state youth chief Amir Ghazali condemned the burning of Lim's poster during the demonstration.
He described as "unruly and unethical" the stomping and torching of a state government leader's poster.
Buah Pala is a closed chapter
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister P Ramasamy said the Kampung Buah Pala issue, raised by the BN demonstrators, was a closed chapter.
He said the state government was helping the remaining nine residents to get their rightful compensation.
"We want the residents to cooperate with the state government to finalise the negotiations," he said.
The newly-formed Kampung Buah Pala ad-hoc committee head R Karunakaran criticised the protesters for using the village issue to gain political mileage.
"I hope from today no one will use Kampung Buah Pala issue for their own gains," he said.
Karunakaran, who is also a DAP member, praised the state government for compensating the residents with double-storey houses.
Meanwhile, a former Kampung Buah Pala resident, M Santha, criticised residents' association chairperson M Sugumaran for
handing over a memorandum
to the chief minister yesterday.
"I don't want the state government to help Sugumaran and the others to get compensation," she said.
Rayer condemned Sugumaran as a man without principles for seeking the state government's help after originally refusing the offer of double-storey houses.
