PKR vice-president N Surendran denied an online news report that the party de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim has tasked him to lead a three-man committee to handle Indian grouses and Anwar himself would court back the support of Hindraf founder P Uthayakumar.

“The article contains a number of serious inaccuracies,” said the newly-appointed PKR veep, referring to the report titled ‘Anwar in bid to win back Indian support’ published by online news portal The Malaysian Insider yesterday.

According to the report, Anwar, PKR’s Indian leaders and leaders of Indian NGOs had a closed-door meeting last week to discuss ebbing Indian community support for Pakatan Rakyat.

One of the two decisions made by Anwar in the meeting, the report said, was to have open talks with Uthayakumar to seek his help in getting the support of the Indian community.

NONE It quoted sources as saying that Anwar would take up the “Uthayakumar matter” with Pakatan leaders such as PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang.

However, these claims were denied by Surendran ( right ), who attended the meeting.

“In fact, no such thing was decided. The matter was never even discussed,” the lawyer said.

“It is also untrue that I was tasked with forming a three-man committee to look into Indian grouses,” he added.

Surendran said the problems facing marginalised sections of the Indian and other communities have always been a priority for PKR and other Pakatan member parties.

“These problems have been caused entirely by the blatant neglect and indifference of the BN federal government towards these marginalised communities over the past 50 years.

“Although efforts have been made by Pakatan state governments towards resolving these problems, comprehensive change can only come about if the federal government commits its political will and fiscal resources to this effort,” he said.
