Universiti Malaya (UM) authorities have refused to respond to why the police have set up camp in the campus, claiming that this is out of their jurisdiction.

NONE The Student Representative Council of the university revealed yesterday that several squads of police personnel, including those from Federal Reserve Unit (FRU), have camped themselves in the hostels in a move they believe is in preparation for the Bersih rally in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow.

When Malaysiakini called UM deputy vice-chancellor Professor Dr Rohana Yusof this morning to inquire why the UM management would allow the police and FRU to camp in the university, she admitted that police personnel were camped inside UM, but refused to comment further.

She then indicated that the university’s international and corporate relations (ICR) department would be the right party to respond.

However, when contacted by Malaysiakini , Dr Su’ad Awab of the ICR also refused to make any comment.

Later, she replied by email, saying, “It is not under UM’s purview or jurisdiction to release a statement or give comments with regard to the situation.”
