'Khairy, go all the way in amendments for hudud'

PAS Youth has lauded Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin’s suggestion that the federal government amends the constitution to allow Kelantan to implement hudud law.
"Selangor PAS Youth congratulates Khairy for offering a viewpoint that is 'against the grain' with the mainstream position of Umno members and leaders, including their president, regarding this hudud issue," Selangor Youth chief Hasbullah Mohd Ridzwan said in a statement today.
He said that as the party that has been in power for over 50 years and which claims to represent the Malay-Muslim community, Umno is rightfully the party that should be at the forefront of implementing hudud law in Malaysia, and as such should not obstruct Kelantan’s move to do so.
Hasbullah hoped that Khairy’s suggestion would not end there but that government would go all the way in making the suggested amendments.
"Don’t just talk clever and spew rhetoric in the press to champion the hudud issue, but act like a cowardly kid when pressured and threatened by Umno-BN leaders and others," he warned Khairy.
He called on all of Umno Youth to throw its support behind Khairy’s suggestion.
Khairy, who is Rembau MP, was quoted in Mingguan Malaysia , the weekend edition of the Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia , as saying yesterday: "Umno Youth does not want to see PAS continue to make the hudud issue a political commodity.
"The federal government needs to amend the federal constitution in order to allow PAS to implement (hudud) in Kelantan."
The age-old hudud issue, which is very much connected with elections, made its predictable comeback last week, with both sides of the political divide claiming it to be each other’s sandiwara .
While PAS and DAP appear to be head-to-head on the issue, with opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim also turning the tables on Umno, claiming it was hypocritical for keeping quiet while leaving it to MCA and Gerakan to decry the issue of implementing hudud.
