PKR vice-president N Surendran today accused the police of deliberately making a statement in an attempt absolve Wanita Umno chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil on the National Feedlot Corporation (NFC) scandal in view of the Umno general assembly.

“This is a transparent attempt by the national police leadership to perform ‘damage control’ on behalf of the ruling Umno party. Why issue such a statement when investigations are still continuing?

“It makes no sense for the police to state their conclusions before the end of the investigation. And why make such a statement all of a sudden, just as the high profile Umno AGM gets under way?”

Earlier today, deputy inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar had said its preliminary finding showed that there was no criminal breach of trust in NFC’s management, the chairperson of which is Shahrizat’s husband.

This was despite several claims made by PKR strategy director Rafizi Ramli on alleged misspending of a RM250 million government loan by NFC to purchase luxury condominiums, a luxury car, prime land and holiday trips.

“Why are the police avoiding calling in the minister? Significantly, this blatant police attempt at whitewashing NFC and Shahrizat comes just as further embarrassing revelations have been made about the NFC fiasco.”

Describing the statement by Khalid as “shameful”, Surendran said this was evidence that the police lacked independence and its leadership’s bias towards BN.

“We call upon the police leadership, and also the MACC and attorney-general, to bear in mind that they exist to serve the rakyat, and we demand that they discharge their duties professionally and independently,” he said.
