The motion on foreign maid was tabled by a delegate from Indera Mahkota, Zuriati Muhammad, who wanted measures taken to reduce the country's dependence on foreign maids.
"There are about 200,000 foreign maids in our country and most of them are Indonesians.
"Why the need to employ foreigners. The job should not be regarded low class and the time has come for us to take local maids," she added.
She suggested that the government offer maids reasonable salary, including subscription to the Employees Provident Fund and the Social Security Organisation, to make the job attractive to locals.
A delegate from Batu division, Salbiah Abdul Wahab, when debating the motion, suggested that the government set up an institution to train maids.
Course on domestic helpers should also be offered at colleges, she added.
