The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) wants the government to observe human rights standards in handling the crisis in Lahad Datu, Sabah, including the arrest of 97 persons under the Security Offences Act (Special Measures) 2012 (Sosma).

“The commission urges the government to ensure that due process of the law and fundamental human rights principles are fully respected,” Suhakam chairperson Hasmy Agam said in a statement issued yesterday.

NONE As of yesterday, the authorities have detained 97 individuals suspected to be linked to the Sulu intruders under Sosma and another 156 under the Immigration Act 1959/63.

Expressing his condolences to the families of security forces personnel who had lost their lives in Ops Daulat, Hasmy said Suhakam was also deeply concerned about the safety and well-being of all Sabahans, particularly those directly affected by the ongoing security crisis.

“These include residents who have been traumatised by the horrific attacks that took place in the crisis areas and those who have been displaced and relocated to community halls.

“The commission notes with appreciation the actions taken by the government in providing various assistance and support to the affected groups which include among others, psychological and emotional counselling services, extra medical team members and the installation of extra public facilities for the affected groups.”

Suhakam hopes that the government will continue to ensure that the basic needs and welfare as well as other humanitarian assistance for the affected groups are given primary consideration in its effort to overcome the crisis.

NONE “While the commission looks forward to seeing the displaced residents return to their homes and resume their normal routines, it strongly urges the authorities to continue protecting the residents through the existing security measures towards ensuring a safe and peaceful environment.

“The commission also deems it important for all parties to exercise prudence and caution in responding to the crisis in order to avoid any misunderstandings or speculations that could worsen the situation,”  Hasmy said.

He also expressed hoped that the relevant authorities would continue to provide regular updates and information to the public on the status of the crisis and events as they unfolded.
