Inspector-general of police Ismail Omar clarified that any gathering must fulfill the requirements set in the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, which includes the condition that the organisers must ensure it is a peaceful gathering without arms.

Ismail denied reports which had appeared in the media last night that there is a need for a police permit for any gathering.

“The gathering can be held as long as the organisers inform and meet the district police officer, and that the gathering is not against the law where it should be peaceful and without any weapons.

“There should not be any utterances of seditious manner, provocation and it must be peaceful,” said Bukit Aman public relations officer Assistant Commissioner Ramli Mohamed Yusof in a stat NONE ement.

Ramli ( right ), who is the assistant director of public relations, cited the various erroneous media reports where the IGP did not remark of a need of a police permit for a gathering.

He said it is clear from what the IGP said that there is no mention of a permit requirement. This explanation is to correct the erroneous report by the media over Ismail's statement which was reported yesterday.

On Tuesday, several media outlets erroneously reported that the rally planned by the opposition tomorrow is illegal because the organisers did not apply for a permit, and warned that the rally participants could face arrest.
