The contents of a ‘leaked police memo’ purportedly shedding light on personnel linked to drug syndicates was to have been released this week by anti-crime activist R Sri Sanjeevan.

However, he was shot and injured on Saturday in Bahau, Negri Sembilan.

NONE PKR director of strategy Rafizi Ramli (left) said: "Sanjeevan said he had obtained an internal police memo which lists the (names of) police personnel being investigated (allegedly) for being involved in drug syndicates."

Elaborating on his 20-minute meeting with the MyWatch chairperson last Friday, Rafizi said Sanjeevan had confided that the offences are very serious in that these carry the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

"He said these involved a huge quantity of drugs and extensive trafficking ... based on the seriousness of this, I agreed to meet him this week,” Rafizi told a press conference at the PKR headquarters.

“He also mentioned that it was an internal memo marked ‘sulit’ (confidential).”

However, he said Sanjeevan did not disclose the names of the personnel involved, describing it as "fortunate" that he had not done so.

'Probable reason'

Rafizi said he suspects that Sanjeevan's access to the memo could be behind the shooting.

"It's very probable. I mean, he was not working on anything else .... he talks only to the Home Ministry, police and underworld ... it is only reasonable to think (this was the reason)," he said.

"(During the meeting with Sanjeevan,) I was hesitant and cautioned him (that this is) still an internal investigation. (I said) we should not disclose it because this may prejudice the investigation, and (also that) no charges have been brought yet ...

azlan "Sanjeevan may have stumbled onto a genuine memo ... he told me that he plans to disclose (the contents) this week ... I don't want to explore (this) until he is well enough and he has made a decision.”

Rafizi said the probe should go beyond police personnel and extend to the Home Ministry.

"I think it is too premature for (Home Minister) Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to rule out (police involvement in the shooting),” he added.

"If the underworld and drug syndicates have links with some people in the police force, I am sure they may also have links with people in other parts of the ministry.”
