MCA Youth chief puts party post on the line
MCA Youth chief Wee Ka Siong may not contest at all in the upcoming party polls if president Dr Chua Soi Lek breaks his promise not to defend his post.
MCA Youth chief Wee Ka Siong may not contest at all in the upcoming party polls if president Dr Chua Soi Lek breaks his promise not to defend his post.
Wee said that party integrity would be at stake if Chua does not keep his word, having said on May 6 that he will not contest the presidency.
“If he (Chua, right) changes his mind, I will seriously consider not contesting (for) any post.
“(This is) for a simple reason, the party’s integrity and accountability are at stake,” Wee told a press conference at Wisma MCA in Kuala Lumpur today.
If Chua keeps his promise, Wee said he would contest provided that he gets support from the central delegates.
However, Wee said, it was not the right time for him to talk about the party post which he was vying for, as MCA was facing an urgent challenge, the EGM scheduled to take place this Sunday.
“I’m still getting feedback of central delegates and grassroots... That’s why I’ve yet to make an announcement at this point of time,” he said.
Asked about the possibility of Chua stepping down and not defending his post, Wee said that based on his political sense, Chua had the intention to step down.
“Knowing him (Chua) for so many years, he is a sporting man. You (journalists) don’t assume that he would definitely defend his post, he may keep his promise,” he said.
Asked what post he would be vying for, Wee said it is too early to decide.
Wee also quashed rumours that he had betrayed deputy president Liow Tiong Lai, saying that he will not contest for any post that Liow is targetting.
Liow had earlier announced his intention to take on the presidency when the polls are conducted by the end of December.
Stressing amity with Liow
Stressing his amity with Liow, Wee said he had gone through challenges and hardship in his political path with Liow.
Last week, Chua had said that he was willing to quit if Liow was prepared to do the same.
To this, Wee slammed Chua by saying that in a democratic party, no one could stop others from contesting for any post.
“In a democratic party, you must have the right to vote or you must be eligible to be elected as a leader, as long as you are MCA central delegate, you are eligible to contest.
“No one can stop you from contesting... If you dislike a person, you can cast a vote against him (or her).”
Wee said he was saddened to see the party in this stage where the members were ‘killing’ each other.
“The character assassination is very unbecoming, it’s time to urge the party members to stop all these.
“After the party election, please for god sake, put the party’s interests above everyone’s,” advised Wee.
On the EGM primary agenda which was to censure Liow, Wee lamented that it was unjustifiable to blame Liow himself for MCA’s defeat in the last general election.
“If you all need to determine who is to be responsible for the defeat, and if you are talking about the degree of the responsibility, then the president, deputy president and other central delegates should be blamed,” he said.
