'MCA members chided at coffee shops during GE13'

Jerai MCA division chief Yeoh Sue Leong said the winds of change had been strong during the last general election, with many MCA members having been scolded by members of the public as they went around coffee shops in their campaigning.
“But the conditions are getting better now,” said Yeoh.
To this, MCA vice-president Chor Chee Heung (left) said there were positive signs to show that the voting trend of the Chinese in Sungai Limau now was better, compared with the 13th general election.
“There are a total of 1,827 Chinese voters in this Malay-dominated constituency, but only 10 percent of the votes, or 180-odd votes, went to BN in the May general election,” Chor said after inspecting the party’s by-election operations centre today.
Ironically, Chor said, 965 of these Chinese voters in the constituency are MCA members. This meant that in GE13, most of the party members in Sungai Limau voted for the late former Kedah menteri besar Azizan Abdul Razak of PAS.
On the Sungai Limau campaign, Chor said MCA was determined to obtain more than 50 percent of the Chinese votes by making house-to-house visits.
Asked if Chinese votes were insignificant, Chor said: “Win or lose, we need to let everybody know that the Chinese are not only voting for PAS.
“If BN can bring more local development, I believe Chinese will vote for BN,” he enthused.
Chor also explained that many Chinese voted against BN in GE13 may have done so because of their sentiments for the late Azizan.
“Azizan has left us... there’s no such factor this time around, so I hope to see a breakthrough,” he said.
