Some 700 voters in the Sungai Limau constituency were given spectacles worth RM180 and were explicitly told that it was meant to help them vote for their benefactor, BN.
At a 'meet the people' session at a Felda settlement in Simpang Tiga this afternoon, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Jamil Khir Baharom said the spectacles will help them "see" come voting day.
"I hope after getting the spectacles, you can see clearly on Nov 4. Tick on the box of the one who gave you the spectacles, put an 'X' on the BN," he said.
After the event, participants were told to select their spectacle frames and have their eyes checked by one of eight opticians. The spectacles can only be collected at a later date.
About 1,000 people at the event were also given 1 litre of cooking oil each.
Thus far, this is the most obvious incident of vote-buying in the Sungai Limau by-election campaign since the campaign began yesterday.
Money for renovations
Jamil Khir was accompanied by Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir and Felda Global Ventures Holdings chairperson Mohd Isa Abdul Samad.
At the same event, Mukhriz handed over mock cheques totalling RM1.12 million for 200 households in the settlement. Each recipient was allocated about RM5,000 for renovations.
This is on top of the RM1.2 million allocation approved by the Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Ministry on Tuesday for small projects in the constituency such as road repairs and street lighting repairs.
The Sungai Limau contest is between BN's Ahmad Sohaimi Lazim, 52, and PAS' Mohd Azam Samat, 37. Ahmad Sohaimi is a former university lecturer while Mohd Azam is an ustaz.
The by-election was called following the death of former Kedah menteri besar Azizan Abdul Razak, who had won the Sungai Limau state assembly seat five times in a row since 1995.
