Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has condemned the incident where a slab of meat, believed to be pork, was hurled into a mosque in Bukit Mertajam at dawn today.

Lim said the "treacherous act" was done to provoke disunity and destroy the multi-racial and multi-religious harmony that Malaysians have been enjoying since Independence in 1957.

He urged Penangites to remain calm and continue their multi-racial and multi-religious approach to maintain harmony within the community.

"This is the only way to defeat the provocateurs and the criminals who are out to provoke disunity among us," Lim said, after visiting the Cherok Tokun mosque.

Lim was responding to a police report lodged this morning by deputy imam Saad Arop, 78, who suspected that a slab of pork had been hurled into the entrance of the mosque, which is notably situated several metres away from Permatang Pauh MP Anwar Ibrahim's ( left ) residence.

Saad discovered the meat when he entered the mosque for his dawn prayers at about 5.30am.

State CID chief senior assistant commissioner Mazlan Kesah mentioned that the incident is being probed under Section 295 of the Penal Code, which deals with cases of harming or defiling places of worship with the intention to undermine religious harmony.

Lim said the mosque committee members - who he had met on his visit to the mosque - have remained very calm.

"The mosque is situated on the roadside, so anyone can do it," he noted.

As for the lack of CCTV equipment around the area, Lim said that the state government would do the necessary and install units accordingly.

He has also asked Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim and Machang Bubuk assemblyperson Lee Khai Loon to look into the matter.
