A driver, believed to be drunk, rammed and severely damaged seven shophouses with a laden four-tonne trailer, around Jonker Walk in Malacca.
Central Malacca Deputy OCPD Supt Razali Bakar said the trailer, driven by a 48-year-old man, entered Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock and rammed a newly-renovated shop, causing its walls and roof to collapse at 10.08 last night.
“The driver then reversed and entered Jalan Hang Kasturi and sideswiped six more shops, damaging their walls and roofs and bringing down an electric advertisement board,” Razali said when contacted by Bernama in Malacca today.
He said the trailer stopped at the Jalan Hang Kasturi-Jonker Walk Junction when the cabin could not clear the narrow passage and its body snagged electric cables belonging to Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB).
However, no injury or loss of life was reported in the incident, Razali said.
TNB had to temporarily cut off electricity supply to the area to shift the cables away from the plastic pallet-laden trailer.
He said the trailer was reversed into Jalan Kota Laksamana in Malacca by a representative of the transport company that owned it, at 11.55pm.
“The driver was taken to the Malacca Hospital to undergo examinations for alcohol and drugs,” Razali said.
Preliminary investigation showed hat the driver had 10 summonses for road offences, two of which were yet to be settled, Razali added.
