PDRM is taking the law into its own hands

YOURSAY ‘Is the IGP working for the rakyat or for self-serving politicians?’

Crackdown continues, Penang exco arrested

Negarawan: It is obvious that this is part of a calculated move by Umno-BN to destabilise the Penang state government, just as they had done in Selangor.

Penangites are not easily fooled and will fully stand behind CM Lim Guan Eng and the arrested PPS (Penang Voluntary Patrol Unit) members.

Let's pray that the arrested PPS members will not be harmed and abused by the PDRM (Royal Malaysian Police) while they are under custody.

All Penangites are watching with utter displeasure and disgust towards the PDRM. Families of the arrested PPS members should demand a public apology from PDRM for this outrageous and unconstitutional action.

I wonder who the real gangsters are? The IGP (inspector-general of police) who refuses to abide by court orders (in recent child custody cases) and showing utter disrespect for the court? Or PPS team members who are volunteering to protect the safety of Penangites where the PDRM has utterly failed?

The IGP chooses to upset all Penangites and fair-minded Malaysians on Merdeka Day, a day when all Malaysians are supposed to celebrate our freedom. Is the IGP working for the rakyat or for self-serving politicians?

The life of the CM's family was threatened by Molotov cocktail on Merdeka eve. Why is the IGP faster at arresting members of the peaceful PPS team, rather than arresting the culprits behind the Molotov cocktail?

Why is the IGP not putting more effort into preventing real crime, but wasting the rakyat's time and money on petty matters, and arresting the innocent?

FellowMalaysian: It is indeed unsettling to see the police hauling away the group of volunteer patrolmen who were keeping peace and order during the morning's Merdeka parade.

Instead of giving these patriotic countrymen a pat on the back for paying tribute to the country by participating in the Merdeka march; they were instead rudely and unceremoniously detained by the police.

It is unbecoming for the police to take the law in their hand as the 156 PPS men has so far been held in custody by the police without giving the detainees any plausible reasons for doing so.

If the PPS has run afoul of the law, charge them in court instead of creating an embarrassing ruckus during the national day parade.

Kawak: Under Section 5 of the Society Act, a society can only be declared illegal by the home minister through a government gazette. The IGP has no power to declare a society illegal.

Until the society has been declared illegal, the members have not committed any offence under Section 43 of the Act. This is a layman's interpretation. I hope the lawyers can confirm whether this is correct.

Anonymous #77791780: Let have a look at the records and see whether the Rela (People’s Volunteer Corps) members or the PPS members have committed more crimes?

The so-called ‘voluntary’ Rela members are paid to carry out their jobs, whereas PPS members do not get a single sen.

If there were reports made against a few of the PPS members, they should be investigated. It is extremely idiotic for Polis DiRaja Malaysia to treat the entire PPS as some kind of criminal organisation, including arresting a respected Penang state exco member.

Versey: What crime has 62-year-old state exco Phee Boon Poh and the PPS members committed?

Has our ‘super efficient’ PDRM managed to catch the one who hurled a Molotov cocktail into the residence of Penang CM and those uncouth youths who spat on Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad?

If the public has acknowledged that the organisation has "done good in maintaining public order", though it is not registered, can't the PDRM give them time to register with the ROS and give due assistance in whatever means so that they can be "legalised" and be a great help to PDRM, one that has claimed to be under-resourced?

Is there no priority for the PDRM in enforcing the law? Isn't security one of the important aspects that help to promote tourism industry?

Watchtower: Something needs to be done urgently before the situation deteriorates further. If the PPS, which has been in existence since 2010, is illegal, then bring them to court. Don't go around arresting members like that as if they are the criminals.

As a citizen of this nation, I am very concern about the police actions and inactions over many things.

Hank Marvin: Penang is now another target after what happened in Selangor MB crisis. As for Kelantan Umno can now feel confident that come GE14 the state will fall into their hands as PAS leader Abdul Hadi Awang has been dancing to their tune, just like in Kedah before when the sleeping president let Azizan Abdul Razak turned the state upside down

Idon'tlikekangkung: I suppose 'congratulations' are in order to the police. It looks like you are unable and unwilling to go after the real crooks in the country so you harass those who give voluntary service to the country.

It might have been wiser to go after the Molotov cocktail tosser, don't you think? Or perhaps that is the problem - that you don't think?

My Opinion: An unregistered volunteer that help the community is better than a registered police force. The man who holds a gun and commands a 100,000 force calls himself IGP, but a small group of volunteers out to keep the peace, he calls them gangsters.

Not Convinced: You’re right, My Opinion. To put it in another way, here’s a quote from Noam Chomsky's ‘Pirates and Emperors’:

“In the ‘City of God,’ St Augustine tells the story of a pirate captured by Alexander the Great. The Emperor angrily demanded of him, ‘How dare you molest the seas?’

“To which the pirate replied, ‘How dare you molest the whole world? Because I do it with a small boat, I am called a pirate and a thief. You, with a great navy, molest the world and are called an emperor.’”

Al Red: First the Molotov cocktail attack on the residence of the CM. Then within hours, the massive arrest of PPS members. One cannot help wondering if the two events are a concerted effort.
