Guilty or not, this is no way to rid the opposition

YOURSAY ‘Umno will only be happy if Anwar is sentenced to life imprisonment.’

Prosecution: Five years for Anwar ‘inadequate’

Vijay47: Considering the venom, the fury, and the obsession with which Umno has been relentlessly pursuing this case, it is obvious that the authorities will settle for nothing less than the demise of Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim, politically or physically.

At his age (67), Anwar can be expected to succumb under the terrible conditions in jail that a relatively younger P Uthayakumar somehow managed to survive.

The prosecution will of course bleat that justice is blind, all men are equal before the law, blah, blah, blah, but I am just wondering, in the history of the country, how many men have been charged with sodomy and with this dedication?

For that matter, wrong as it may be, how is sodomy against national interests? Perhaps the rarity of action against these offences means that somehow Malaysians are averse to this pastime and focus instead on other criminal pursuits.

Tailek: People getting sodomised every day in the Chow Kit area but no legal prosecution happens. The Malaysian public knows better.

Whether guilty or not this is not the way to remove political opposition, just as sedition charges are not.

Fair Play: That's the problem with prosecutors who think with their heart instead of with their head.

In today's era of free access and instant dissemination of information and knowledge, physical containment of a person is worse than useless.

Unless his thought and his spirit are contained, sooner or later the right-thinking rakyat will break the shackles to make monumental change for the better.

History will repeat itself, time and again. Nelson Mandela took more than 25 years to do what he did. Anwar, whether in person or through his thought and spirit, might do the same for our nation too.

Wg321: Umno-BN will only be happy if Anwar is sentenced to life imprisonment. If that is what they want, let it be. Anwar will be a living martyr like Nelson Mandela.

While in jail, Anwar will constantly remind us of a government who maintained power through blatant gerrymandering and the manipulation of "race, Islam and royalty", besides practising endemic corruption, nepotism, kleptocracy, cronyism, etc.

Even if our national debt reached 90 percent of GDP, Umno will still say it is manageable. It is okay if next year’s national Budget consists of 100 percent operating expenditure and zero percent for development.

Next door, a rising star, Joko Widodo, is giving hope to the Indonesian people. Besides Anwar, who is going to give hope to the Malaysian people? PM Najib Razak? Or his wife, Rosmah Mansor?

Hplooi: The one who should be punished with 20 years jail and 10 stroke of the rotan should be the despicable person in charge of this miscarriage of justice.

Despite a clear case of incompetence and malfeasance (bordering on the traitorous), this man is still the chief persecutor.

Rupert16: The prosecution has yet to prove anything and is now talking about enhancing the sentence.

This only confirms what we all already know - the court hearing is a ‘sandiwara’ (shadow play) aimed to break Pakatan up.

Anak, Bangsa, Malaysia: There may not be any hope in this case as the entire Umno machinery wants to put Anwar behind bars.

This is political persecution of the highest order. And now they want to enhance the prison term further.

Rck Teo: This government is sick to the core. Failing to reverse the Pakatan tide, they are seeking revenge to incarcerate Anwar.

How many people in the history of our Penal Code have anyone being charge for voluntary carnal intercourse?

The government is using an archaic law to imprison Anwar and the people know it. Held will break loose if they convict Anwar.

Doc: If Anwar is such a despicable sodomiser as claimed by the prosecution, most likely he will end up sodomising a whole bunch of fellow inmates.

Just look at Anwar's Sylvester Stallone-style physical condition. He can surely pin a guy down without much effort.

I think it’s best to acquit him and spare the prison inmates. Also if Anwar is in prison, who is Umno going to blame the calamities that befall this nation?

Peacemaker: DSAI (Anwar) led Pakatan Rakyat to destroy BN's two-third majority in Parliament in the last two elections.

In fact, 51 percent of the majority voted for Pakatan in GE13, hence technically Pakatan should be ruling the country and it’s highly possible that the Anwar's presence can completely destroy BN in the next election.

The only way for BN to continue their regime is to completely destroy Anwar's political career.

More hideous than crime is repressive justice
