Police report lodged over 'burning Quran' remark
DAP has lodged a police report against Baling Wanita Umno chief Mashitah Ibrahim over her remarks that the Chinese community had burned the Quran during a prayer ritual.
DAP has lodged a police report against Baling Wanita Umno chief Mashitah Ibrahim over her remarks that the Chinese community had burned the Quran during a prayer ritual.
"We feel that this statement is irresponsible," said Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching.
She said there was only one such incident reported in Kedah, but Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir clarified on Nov 24 that the person responsible was a mentally-ill Malay man.
The menteri besar also revealed that the Quran was not burned but torn.
Teo said that Mashitah should be investigated under Section 298 (A) and 505 of the Penal Code.
Section 298 (A) relates to offences causing disharmony, disunity or feelings of enmity whereas Section 505 concerns statements conducing public mischief.
Mashitah had made the remarks during the Wanita Umno assembly when urging the wing’s members to defend Islam.
Teo said that even if the report of Quran burning by the Chinese community was true, the people would be against it and take necessary action.
"Even if there is a Chinese man or woman or non-Muslim that burns the Quran. We all would condemn such an action.
" It is very irresponsible that she (Mashitah) said the whole Chinese community in Kedah has disgraced the religion," she added.
Meanwhile, Batu Kawan MP Kasthuri Patto, who accompanied Teo to file the report with the Tun HS Lee police station in Kuala Lumpur, criticised Wanita Umno for "plucking issues from the air" instead of focusing on important matters.
She said even after the issue had been clarified by the Kedah menteri besar, Umno was still harping on something that is irrelevant.
Also present were DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang's political secretary Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud and party member Syefura Othman.
Speaking to reporters, Dyana said Mashitah's statement was "uncalled for" and could incite racial tension.
