Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali has threatened to sue The Star group managing director and CEO Wong Chun Wai for RM500,000 in damages over an article he wrote.

According to The Star today, Wong’s lawyers had received a letter of demand from Ibrahim’s lawyers on Tuesday, demanding a retraction of the article and the statement it contains, a letter of undertaking not to write such statements in the future, and RM500,000 costs for the damages it supposedly caused.

The Nov 2 article 'A mind-boggling spin' was published in Wong’s column, questioning the attorney-general’s rationale for not charging Ibrahim under the Sedition Act over his “bible-burning” remark.

Claiming that the article contained “baseless defamatory articles”, Ibrahim’s lawyers gave Wong (right ) 14 days from the letter’s date on Nov 24 to respond or face legal action.

Wong was quoted as saying that his lawyers have been instructed to issue a response.

“My stand remains the same. The moderates will continue to speak up.

“Say no to extremism. If the case has to end up in court, then we will fight him on,” he said.

Ibrahim had said in early 2013 that Malay-language bibles containing the word ‘Allah’ should be burnt, drawing public outcry.

Attorney-general Gani Patail had said Ibrahim’s remark had no seditious tendency, because he was referring specially to Muslim students who were allegedly handed the bibles near SMK Jelutong, and because he was only defending the sanctity of Islam.
