'This year's flood worse than in 1967'

FLOODS “As long as I have stayed here, there were two big floods, but this is the bigger one,” says a senior citizen caught in the floods ravaging Kelantan.
Mohamad Salleh ( right ), 80, when met at his house in Kampung Kota, Pasir Mas, said this is the first time the waters has entered his house since the big floods in 1967.
However, Mohamad, whose house is built high above the ground, said the water only rose to two feet.
“In the big flood before this, only three of the steps of the house were submerged. This time, however, it is up to the waist.”
He reiterated that it was an immense flood this time around, for even when the roads were low back then, the flood level was low.
Now, even with the roads on higher ground, the flooding reaches calf level.
Despite admitting that he was caught off guard by the quick rising floods, Mohamad, a widower is adamant about not wanting to move out.
His reason is that house he is living in is built on high ground and flood water barely reaches the floor.
More than 250,000 people across Kelantan, Pahang, Terengganu, Perak and Johor have so far been evacuated from their homes because of the floods.
Humanitarian NGO Mercy has also stated that the flooding this year is worse than the one in 1967.
