FLOODS Housewife Zainun Zakaria is staying at a relief centre in flood-hit Kelantan but cooks at home for her family of nine.
To do this, Zainun, 42, travels by boat daily from the relief centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Penambang to her house in Kampung Penambang, about 100 metres away, and back.
Her husband Ahmad Suhaimi, 48, is staying put at their house which is waist-high in floodwaters because he insists on taking care of their home. Thus, the need for Zainun to cook at home.
"My children and I stay at the relief centre, which is also flooded. I go to my house at about 11am, using a boat borrowed from the villagers," said the mother of seven children aged six to 24.
Zainun said she would bring along with her some of the food that she cooks for her children and several other evacuees at the relief centre.
"I just cook the usual stuff, fried fish and salted fish. Supply of food is running out, so I have to adjust accordingly," she said.
She also said that there was disruption in the supply of electricity and water to the relief centre, making it difficult to cook there.
"There is limited supply of fresh water. We wait for delivery of fresh water, but make do with the floodwaters for washing plates, pans and cups.
"Candles provide light at night. It is a sad situation, but we have come to accept it," she said.
Zainun said the floods this time were the worst since 2004.
"Previously, there were a small number of evacuees at the relief centre but now the number has gone up due to the extent of the floods.
"My family was among the first of the evacuees at this centre. We came when the water at our house was chest-high," she said.
