Deputy Finance Minister Ahmad Maslan yesterday announced that both fuels will be priced at between RM1.90 and RM1.95 starting January.
However, Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli rejected this and said RON95 should be priced at RM1.75 a litre and diesel at RM1.79.
This includes the profit margin and cost reimbursement the government promised the oil companies, at 32 sen per litre for RON95 and 23 sen per litre for diesel.
Rafizi said this is because the market price of RON95 and diesel had fallen to RM1.43 and RM1.56 respectively on Dec 30.
He further claimed that the government had secretly been pocketing extra profits from petrol taxes, as prices had fallen as early as Dec 1.
According to a chart furnished by Rafizi, RON95 and diesel prices, inclusive of profit, should have been at RM2.05 and RM2.10 per litre starting this month, and should have steadily decreased to the Dec 30 prices
“Because the rakyat continues to pay more than the market price (even without subsidies), Barisan Nasional has been reaping huge profits by collecting petrol taxes without announcing it to the rakyat,” he said in a statement today.
“The total petrol tax collected secretly by the government for December 2014 is RM633 million without the rakyat’s knowledge,” he added.
As such, Rafizi demanded that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak explain what this tax revenue had been spent on.
He also repeated his call for fuel subsidies to be reintroduced, so that RON95 and diesel prices at the pump can be lowered to RM1.61 and RM1.64 per litre respectively.
