The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said it will check if there is basis to probe 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operations) Mohd Shukri Abdull was responding to a report lodged by Batu Kawan Umno deputy chief Khairuddin Abu Hassan against 1MDB.

"MACC will be calling Khairuddin to get additional information from him before deciding whether there is basis to investigate under the MACC Act 2009," he said in a statement today.

He noted the information furinished by Khairuddin is the same that was given to the police.

Mohd Shukri assured that MACC would act professionally and in accordance with the Act.

Khairuddin on Dec 12 last year lodged a police report against 1MDB over its financial management.

Yesterday, he filed another report with the MACC.

Wholly owned by the Finance Ministry, 1MDB has been heavily criticised for parking RM8.3 billion in a tax haven abroad instead of investing locally.

It has since announced that the full amount had been redeemed.

1MDB has also been criticised for overpaying RM2.7 billion for expiring independent power producer companies in 2012 and forking out US$476 million (RM1.7 billion) in commission to Goldman Sachs for two fundraising exercises in 2012 and 2013 respectively.
