Umno backbencher Nur Jazlan Mohamed believes that although Umno will stay in power, the prime ministers of the country will "come and go".

"We will become like Japan, where the ruling party stays in power. And Umno is still quite powerful.

"But prime ministers will go through a musical chair system, and we will do that until we find somebody who is honest and has key interests of the people at heart," said the Pulai MP at a forum organised by the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (Ideas) in Kuala Lumpur today.

Nur Jazlan had earlier explained that this is because Malaysians do not want leaders who take too long to institute reforms.

He later joked that he wouldn't mind such a situation, as he would probably become prime minister (under such a system).

"I will never make it as prime minister under the current institutionalised system of Umno.

"But under the musical chairs system, I think yes, why not?" he quipped, drawing laughter from the audience.

In a press conference later, Nur Jazlan noted that Najib is now unsure of how to move forward, because although his predecessor Abdullah Ahmad Badawi ( right ) had made many reforms, the latter was still pressured to resign after BN's dismal performance in the 2008 general election.

"In 2004, he (Abdullah) was given a big mandate and in 2008, the people threw him out by giving him a bad result in the general election.

"So, I think that is another contributive factor to the prime minister being unsure of what he is doing.

"He (Najib) has put in good plans, but then he has not carried them out to the satisfaction of many people," he added.
