Police reportedly detained another activist under the Independent Cartoonist Group (KKI) for sedition today.

Lawrence Jeyaraj, 45, was picked up from his Taman Cuepaces home at about 6.30pm by a five-member police team before being taken to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

His lawyer Michelle Yesudas confirmed that Jeyaraj was being investigated under the Sedition Act for several Facebook posts.

She added that police would be applying for a remand order for him tomorrow morning.

Police, when contacted this evening, refused to confirm or deny Jeyaraj's arrest.

Jeyaraj's wife, Agnes Padan said the police team did not seize anything from their home and detained Jeyaraj after briefly questioning him.

Sedition Act dragnet

KKI spokesperson Zulkiflee Awar Ulhaque, better known as Cartonnist Zunar, confirmed that Jeyaraj was a member of KKI.

Pending police confirmation, it would seem that Jeyaraj is the latest in a string of arrests police have made under the Sedition Act in a dragnet stretching back for more than a month.

Among those hauled up were Zunar himself, Taiping MP Nga Kor Ming, MP for Pandan Rafizi Ramli and PKR Reformation Movement Jingga 13’s head Fariz Musa.

Yesterday, Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) secretary-general S Arutchelvan ( pix ) joined the list of those detained under the Sedition Act.

He was released this evening after a police remand order for him was rejected.
