PKR vice-president Tian Chua is the latest to be arrested in relation to the Kita Lawan rally.

The Batu lawmaker was detained when he went to the Dang Wangi police headquarters this morning to record his statement.

So far 11 people have been arrested in connection with the rally to press for opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s release

Chua's case, ASP Sabri Yenteng, indicated the Batu MP will be taken to Jinjang police lockup later today at 4pm.

"Tian Chua will be brought to Jinjang for overnight detention and his remand hearing will take place there the next morning. However, ASP Sabri refused to confirm if his statement will be recorded today or not," Paulsen told reporters.

The Batu MP is being investigated under Section 143 of the Penal Code with police initially saying he was also supposed to be probed under Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act.

Paulsen said the police crossed out Section 9(5) after realising it had been deemed unconstitutional by the Court of Appeal.

"It goes to show police will try and investigate someone for anything at all and then just cross it out when they feel like it," he added.

Police 'harassment'

Section 143 of the Penal Code states that ‘whoever is a member of an unlawful assembly shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to six months or with fine or with both.’

Paulsen said what police were doing was a "harassment" of Tian Chua as he is a member of Parliament. Tian was served with an arrest warrant at his home by six or seven plainclothes policemen late last night.

Speaking to reporters before entering the police station, Tian said police had, in fact, wanted to detain him overnight and take his statement only in the morning.

However, his lawyer R Sivarasa, who coincidentally happened to be in the area came to his rescue and managed to get the police to leave, promising Tian Chua will voluntarily go to the Dang Wangi police station today.

"Actually, I had already made arrangements to give them my statement on Sunday but I don't understand why they decided to show up at my house last night," said Tian.

Also present at the Dang Wangi police station today to have their statements recorded were Partis Socialis Malaysia (PSM) and student leader Fahmi Zainol and PSM activist KS Bawani.

They were called in to record their statements in relation to the very first Kita Lawan rally held on Feb 14 in front of Sogo shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur.

Fahmi told reporters police were "fishing" for information as they had pressed him and Bawani to answer questions pertaining to the organisers and participants of the Kita Lawan rallies as well as the source of funding.

A candlelight vigil will be held tonight at 9pm in front of the Jinjang police station to show support for Tian Chua, say activists.
