Hudud law could have prevented robbers from breaking into Selangor Speaker Hannah Yeoh’s parents' house, according to Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma).

"If DAP accepts hudud, severe punishment could have been meted out on the robber but unfortunately DAP rejects hudud," said Isma president Abdullah Zaik Abd Rahman.

He added that Islam placed great importance on safeguarding lives and properties.

"With the implementation of hudud, robbers would face heavy punishment," he said, referring to the Islamic law prescribing the amputation of limbs for thieves.

"Such crimes can recur because the robbers are not afraid of the current laws," he added.

Stiff punishment

Abdul Rahman also questioned if Yeoh, who is the DAP state assemblyperson for Subang Jaya, would continue to defend the human rights of robbers after this incident.

"Or would she want the robber to be given stiff punishment?" he asked.

Abdul Rahman was responding to news reports of parang-wielding robbers with face masks breaking into the house of Yeoh's parents yesterday.

In the 10am incident, the DAP representative's father and brother were tied up while her mother, maid, grand aunt and nephew were forced to cover their heads with a blanket.

DAP has been one of the most vocal opponents of PAS' attempt to push for the implementation of Islamic law in Kelantan.
