Three hours for IGP’s brother, three nights for others

YOURSAY ‘And why haven't they arrested former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad yet?’

Ambiga arrested, to be detained overnight

David Dass: It was May Day. The rally, although big, was peaceful. Peaceful assemblies are allowed. Ambiga Sreenevasan spoke at the rally. That is also allowed.

Detaining Ambiga - who has become known the world over as an activist, who has been recognised internationally and given awards for providing leadership to the Bar, to Bersih and to many other organisations and causes, all seeking to help people obtain their constitutional and legal rights - is plain wrong.

She, along with activists like Azmi Sharom, Zainah Anwar, Haris Ibrahim and Marina Chin, should be seen as good people for this country. The question for us is whether we are a democracy or not?

The Islamic State (IS) and like organisations threaten our democracy, not people like Ambiga. Ambiga helps strengthen our democracy.

It was a good thing to allow the rally to proceed. It was peaceful, without incident. It spoke well for us. Do not spoil it with these arrests.

CQ Muar: Is taking to the streets to protest a new tax such as the goods and services tax (GST), which engenders suffering to the countless poor in the country, wrong in the eyes of the government?

Are you implying that whatever the government decides on, the people must obey and toe the line?

How about counter-suing the government and PDRM (Royal Malaysian Police), especially Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Khalid Abu Bakar, for illegal detention?

Surely there's a law against such injustices when the government consistently claims this is a democratic country.

Tholu: The government is resolutely determined to plunge this beloved country of ours into the darkest of abyss and for us to remain there to rot. They are making successful breakthroughs in achieving that unenviable process. Congratulations to Umno-BN.

Versey: Would and could the inspector-general of police (IGP) tell the rakyat which action is indeed against the law - demanding the removal of the cross from the church at Taman Medan or participating in the anti-GST rally?

What's the reason that IGP's brother, who was involved in the Taman Medan protest, which even the home minister said was seditious , was not given the same treatment to stay overnight in the police station "received" by MPs Nurul Izzah, Rafizi, Tian Chua and now Ambiga? Why?

Kangkung: Najib is showing the world what a tyrant he is. History has shown us that all desperate and oppressive leaders will try to salvage their crumbling regime by being brutal.

Najib is using fear so as to silence the ever louder cry from the rakyat to remove his pet project to tax the poor with GST to pay for his excesses.

SteveOh: It is another dark day for Malaysia when one of its finest citizens can be treated with such disrespect and arrested like a common criminal.

No fair court of justice would ever allow a police cell to hold someone of her exemplary character and notable credentials. It is yet another taint on the nation.

The country has lost its democratic credentials while Ambiga can hold her head high as a true daughter of democracy and victim of political persecution.

Vijay Shanmugam: A sword can be wielded well only by those who are physically fit. But words can flow from the pen of even a feeble man or woman.

If a person is a good, he or she can use the words to their desired effect. Many great people had inspired revolutions, with just a few words.

Apa Ini?: Why haven't they arrested former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad yet? If anyone, this man has been virtually tearing the PM and his cabinet apart, day after day with issues on missing billions, and even an inquiry into a certain murder.

Surely, he is much more dangerous to the stability of the government and to the nation than those participating in a May Day rally?

No BS Please: The police are helping the opposition by being so obviously biased. The police chief’s own brother was merely detained for three hours, while others for three nights. The public are not stupid and we can see how twisted and warped the way the police force functions.

Anonymous_1391693662: There are many concerned comments made by many of us here in Malaysiakini . But what good are these comments for?

We need to do something more effective. The situation has gone from bad to worse.

It’s very clear the cops are given strict instructions to nab anyone criticising the government and its unfavourable policies.

So people, come out with some solid solutions other than comments. We need to do something about this.

RCZ: Malaysians, please don't accept this lying down and silent. Ambiga is a patriotic citizen and fighting for your and my rights. Let's remember this sad day and say enough is enough.

Kilgore: You tread a very dangerous line when you jail the most respectable, patriotic and intelligent public leaders. This is what happens when we elect unqualified politicians.

Ambiga is right about ‘faceless cowards’ in PDRM
