'Separate team should probe cop rape threat'

Investigators from different police station must handle the case of a cop who allegedly threatened to rape a woman detained after a rally on May 1, DAP’s Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo said.

Gobind said it was surprising that the victim was asked by the police to return to the same police station where the threat was made, for her statement to be taken.

"They (the police) must start by first setting up an independent team to probe the complaint in this case and investigations should not be carried out at Dang Wangi, which is for now, the alleged scene of the crime," he said in a statement today.

"The victim is complaining of a threat by an officer at that very station and the police want her to go back there to make statements?

"An incident like this can be extremely traumatising. How can the police expect the victim to go back there for a statement?" he asked.

There would also be concerns of bias if officers from the same station are assigned to investigate the case, he said.

Gobind (photo) said a rape threat is a serious matter so police should demonstrate seriousness and transparency in this case.

"They must work towards restoring public confidence that police stations are places which are safe and more importantly that they will do all that is needed to weed out unwanted elements from the force when complaints of this nature arise and fairly.

"This is certainly a matter of public interest and concern which I will raise in Parliament next week," he said.

Maisara Amira (photo) , 21, lodged a complaint at the Petaling Jaya police headquarters over the alleged rape threat on May 6.

The youth wants her case to be investigated by police officers other than from the Dang Wangi police station due to concerns of abuse of powers and injustice.

Maisara was arrested after she participated in the May 1 rally and was remanded for four days with 22 others.

On May 5, Maisara said she was brought to an investigation room where she was quizzed by three police officers.

After choosing to remain silent, one of the police officers allegedly told her: “Do you want me to rape you? In this room, there is only you and I. This room has a camera and a microphone, if I sell (the video), I will become rich.”

She said the police officer was not in uniform and was not wearing a name tag.
