With some 836 people arrested to date for not settling their summonses, a minister who has done the same should not be spared, said Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng.

 

Lim in a press conference today made public the summons record of Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai, which showed he had two outstanding summonses for speeding issued under the automated enforcement system (AES).

 

Liow’s vehicle also had another summons for having tinted his windows too dark. Two of the summonses were from 2013 while the third was from 2014.

 

"Why didn't he pay the fines? Should the people follow the minister as an example?

 

"The police should immediately bring him to court for the unpaid traffic summons or call off the ongoing Ops Warta," Lim ( photo ) declared.

Liow did not respond to Malaysiakini' s request for comment.

 

‘Disclose AES contract’

 

On a separate matter, Lim urged the Transport Ministry to disclose the terms of the AES concession contract after the government took over the project from ATES Sdn Bhd and Beta Tegap Sdn Bhd.

 

The takeover was prompted by outrage among motorists as the private companies will receive a cut of the summonses captured on AES, raising concerns that enforcement was being turned into a business.

 

Following this, the government-owned Armed Forces Fund Board (LTAT), through its subsidiary, took over the project.

 

"I deem it a public project now and no 'national secret' is involved," he said.

 

Lim had in August 2013 urged the disclosure of the initial deal with the private companies but was rebuffed by the government on grounds that it was a "national secret".

 

"If both the ministry and LTAT refuse to disclose the details of the takeover of AES, I would suggest that the Public Accounts Committee should initiate an investigation on this matter as public funds were used to compensate some individuals," said Lim.

 

He added that the LTAT board owed retired army men an explanation as their fund was used to complete the takeover.

 

"How will this investment benefit the welfare of the retired army?" he questioned.
