The Opposition’s call for an emergency meeting today of all Federal lawmakers to discuss the issues plaguing Premier Najib Abdul Razak, following the latest allegations by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), is aimed at causing instability in the country.

Umno vice-president and Home Minister, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, in taking this stand, said the proposal by opposition leader Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail would fail, as BN MPs are united in Najib continuing to lead the country.

“Legally, there could be a basis to call for the meeting. But for me there is no need for it at this time,” the home minister was quoted as saying on BN Backbenchers club's website.

Zahid was commenting on Wan Azizah ( photo ), who is also PKR president, proposing an urgent meeting to discuss the implications for the country, following WSJ's allegations against Najib.

It had claimed that US$700 million was diverted from 1MDB funds to Najib’s personal accounts.

Meanwhile, the chairperson of the BN Backbenchers Club (BNBBC) Shahrir Abdul Samad, has advised Wan Azizah to rectify the weaknesses in the opposition before holding such a meeting.

Shahrir was quoted in Utusan Malaysia saying that Wan Azizah's actions were akin to attempts to cover the opposition's weaknesses.

“Wan Azizah should correct her own house as an opposition leader. We see DAP proclaiming that Pakatan no longer exists and has cut ties with PAS. Hence, she should put her own house in order first.

“She should not summon us on grounds of national interest when she has her own game.

“BNBBC continues to support Najib as PM, as we abide by the Federal Constitution and not the foreign media,” the Umno owned daily quoted Shahrir ( photo ), based on a video recording on BNBBC.my.

The BNBBC chairperson added Wan Azizah should not hold the meeting as the WSJ report is not supported by strong evidence.

It was reported that Wan Azizah had called for a meeting today following the WSJ allegations made on Najib.

She said both opposition and BN MPs including NGO leaders should discuss and announce together a decision on this matter.

"I hope with this meeting, MPs from all the parties and NGO can come out with a decision that reflects the concerns of people across the country towards Najib's reliability and leadership as the prime minister of Malaysia," she had said in a statement.
