To say that Low Yat Plaza is slightly different today is perhaps an understatement.

Most of the shops at this popular electronic goods mall today remained closed, despite one worker claiming that the mall's management has said it may issue warnings to shop owners who are not open for business today.

The closing of most of the shops at the mall today is not surprising, after what occurred last night.

Several reporters and a bar staff were injured in attacks after a gathering near the mall turned rowdy.

A worker at one of the electronics shops at Low Yat Plaza told Malaysiakini that the mall management said would issue those outlets that do not open their shops today with warning letters.

"I told them that most of the shops are already closed. They (the management) said those shops would have to tanggung sendiri (face whatever action).

"So we have no choice but to open our shop because we don't want to get any threats," he said.

The worker, who only wanted to be named as Eris, 23, said although his shop was open since 10am, it had, as at past noon today, yet to receive a customer.

'We don't want to interfere with investigations'

However, the management of Low Yat Plaza, when met by Malaysiakini , said it had to reserve its comment on the matter.

"We can't make any statement now because it will interfere with the investigations. We will issue a press statement as soon as possible," said an officer with the mall management.

The few shoppers spotted at the mall appeared quite lost.

Jaumin Sauin, a Sabahan who is on holiday in Kuala Lumpur, said he was at Low Yat Plaza to buy a handphone.

"We are disappointed that most of the shops are closed. Now we have to go somewhere else, because we don't know what time the shops here will open," Jaumin said.

Asked whether he knew what had happened yesterday, he said he had read spome news on the matter.

"But I'm not worried because I know that there is security presence here," Jaumin added.

The brawl last night came in response to an earlier brawl on Saturday evening, when fights erupted on the ground floor of the mall, with seven youths attacking mall staff after one of them was accused of stealing a handphone.

As of 5.30pm today, most of the shops were still closed, apart from a few food outlets.

A planned raid by the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry was also postponed, likely due to the closing of the shops.
