Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said the police will investigate Ambiga Sreenevasan over her purported remarks on possible street protests.

This is after the former Bar Council president told Malaysiakini she refused to respond to the police chief’s call for her to deny a news portal's report on the matter.

During a press conference earlier, Khalid ( photo ) asked Ambiga to explain if she had said street protests would be held unless MPs act to suspend the Najib administration.

However, Ambiga told Malaysiakini she did not want to communicate with the police through the media or issue a denial without seeing the material referred to.

"I want to know which article or tweets he (Khalid) is talking about. I do not wish to communicate with him through the press," she said.

Ambiga, who is the patron of NGO Negara-Ku explained that the news portal's report was from the launch of the 'Rakyat action plan' yesterday.

"We have the plan in writing and Khalid is welcome to see it anytime," she said.

Ambiga also questioned if this is now the standard operating procedure for the police, where cases are announced in the media.

"If the allegation is against me, I'm entitled to see the material (the news report in question).

"I really hope the IGP is giving the same priority to the 1MDB probe," she said.

Khalid is among those on the special task force probing the allegations against the investment fund.

Responding to Ambiga, Khalid said he gave the former Bar Council president an opportunity to deny the issue.

"If she denies it, we would understand that perhaps a mistake happened with the report. But if she does not want to deny it, then we would be forced to act.

"We would have to file a police report and question her under Section 124 of the Penal Code for activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy. This is a serious issue," he said.

Responding to a question, Khalid did not rule out the possibility of arresting Ambiga.
