The police have summoned seven members of the Bersih steering committee and secretariat in connection with the 34-hour rally over the weekend.

The seven will have their statements recorded at the Bukit Aman police headquarters tomorrow.

“They haven’t called me. They went through (our lawyer) Latheefa Koya, so she is arranging for us to meet at Bukit Aman tomorrow,” said Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah.

She said she and six others are being investigated under Sections 120, 124C and 141 of the Penal Code.

Section 120 of the Penal Code deals with the concealment of plans to commit an offence, while Section 141 criminalises unlawful assemblies.

The most serious offence of the three however, is Section 124C, which deals with "attempt to commit activity detrimental to parliamentary democracy" and carries a penalty of up to 15 years imprisonment upon conviction.

Apart from Maria, the others called for questioning are Bersih deputy chairperson Sarajun Hoda Abdul Hassan, treasurer Masjaliza Hamzah, steering committee members Farhana Abdul Halim and Fadiah Nadwa Fikri, and secretariat members Mandeep Singh, and Adam Adli Abdul Halim.

Home ministry monitoring situation

The police had previously declared the rally illegal, while Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi ( photo ) had warned yesterday that arrests could still be made although the rally had passed without incident.

“There were no arrests or trouble. No arrest does not mean no action will be taken by police, Kuala Lumpur City Hall and other enforcement agencies.

“We are monitoring the situation and keeping track of the actions and every word in the speeches of leaders at the assembly. We are also keeping track of those behind the rally," he said.

The 34-hour rally over the weekend drew tens, if not hundreds of thousands of yellow-clad protestors to the streets of Kuala Lumpur, and smaller Bersih rallies were also held in many other cities around the world.

Bersih claimed that an estimated total of 500,000 people have participated in the rally throughout the 34-hour period, peaking at 200,000 persons at one point on Saturday.

Malaysiakini estimates a peak of about 100,000 persons on the first day, and 80,000 on the second day, while Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamad said the police estimated that 50,000 people attended the rally.
