Former Umno leader Khairuddin Abu Hassan has been remanded by police for six days in connection with the 1MDB scandal.

His lead counsel Stanley Augustin said the remand until Hari Raya Aidiladha was granted by Magistrate Ashraf Rezal Abdul Manan.

"Khairuddin has been remanded for six days until Thursday. The magistrate approved the remand order after finding that there is need for further investigation on this matter," Augustin ( photo ) told reporters outside the Dang Wangi police headquarters today.

He added that police believe the documents Khairuddin submitted to Swiss authorities regarding the 1MDB scandal were fake.

Khairuddin was arrested at his home in Mont Kiara yesterday under Section 124C of the Penal Code for allegedly attempting to commit activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy.

He was reportedly scheduled to meet the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) before his exit from the country was blocked and his subsequent detention.

Fighting for people against Najib

Prior to his arrest, Khairuddin had agreed to go to Bukit Aman on Monday for questioning over his police report against 1MDB in Berne, Switzerland.

Besides Switzerland, Khairuddin has also lodged reports on 1MDB in London, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

He said he did so to fight for the people against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Najib ( photo ) has repeatedly denied misusing 1MDB funds for his own personal gain and vowed to solve 1MDB's debt situation soon.

In the face of growing criticism over 1MDB and his leadership from both sides of the political divide, the prime minister has defended himself claiming there is a conspiracy to topple him and his government.
