Impossible task to get 1MDB bosses to bare all

YOURSAY | ‘The remuneration of the bosses in 1MDB must be disclosed.’

'Payments to 1MDB bosses private and confidential'

Quigonbond: I wouldn't expect a government that is abusing its powers to understand the impact of what it has just said.

It's like saying that MOF (Ministry of Finance) can set up private companies and everything going on in there will also be secretive.

At the end of the day, that private company still belongs to the government, and the government belongs to the people. Seriously, you want to use that line on the people instead of heeding their demand for transparency?

We do not just want to know the salaries of 1MDB CEO Arul Kanda and the company’s board of directors, we also want to know whether they have golden parachutes, and all their other perks, direct or indirect benefits, and benefits that may accrue to their family members as well.

You are a government elected by the people. Behave like one instead of behaving like mafia.

Kawak: If funds are directly or indirectly paid out of taxpayers' money, for the sake accountability and transparency, the remuneration of the bosses of 1MDB must be disclosed unless there is something to hide.

Anonymous 759201436321741: Yes, the answer is quite simple. Is 1MDB a public-interest entity?

Fair and true disclosure are paramount for any public interest entity. The Companies Act 1965 (as amended) require a high standard of disclosure for these entities, including companies listed in the stock exchange.

Daniel: All GLCs (government-linked companies) must be held to the same standards as other companies on Bursa Malaysia.

Directors, remuneration of executives, accounts and all relevant company's information must be made available to the public because whatever capital the company employs comes from public funds.

The government or the next elected to office must make the relevant laws to ensure that this is complied with.

Seno: And yet I was told that the authorities, especially those concerning public shares and investments, are encouraging a more open and transparent reporting format in the annual reports of companies.

Where is Gani Patail's MC, asks Dr M

TimeWill Tell: No issue is going to go away by sweeping it under the rug. There are many other questions that remain which may be linked to the MC (medical certificate):

1. What illness has former attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail contracted - the relevant authorities should provide verified proof (medical documents) of his ailment(s) that warranted his immediate removal.

2. Was the manner that he was removed acceptable under the laws as stipulated in the constitution?

3) The Conference of Rulers indicated that investigations into 1MDB should go on without any hindrance. The removal of Abdul Gani as AG is deemed a hindrance to the investigation.

What can be done about this given that the appointment of the AG comes under the purview of the king (with the recommendation of the PM, of course)?

P Dev Anand Pillai: It has been 27 years since the last top judge was sacked by the then administration.

Since then, the new generation of judges are unable to separate themselves from the executive. Hence the doctrine of separation of powers doesn't hold water in a land of endless possibilities.

Perhaps now the grand revered leader of the chosen ones will know what happens when one has to taste his own medicine.

Jonah2: Former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad has the right to publicly criticise just like Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has the right to never criticise. After all, there is no perfect leader.

However, what the rakyat are concerned of is not just democracy and not merely a bunch of major projects to stimulate the market. We also want human rights and freedom, etc.

Mahathir’s ego and unconscious desire to be a dictator is one of his mistakes. He amended the constitution to weaken the Agong and the sultans, and then made sure that the enforcement bodies are defanged.

He sacked Chief Justice Salleh Abas and closed both eyes when judges were openly bought by those who had money. It would be tough for Malaysians and their investors to fully trust the judicial system again.

Endry: Ruthless and completely selfish, Mahathir would think nothing of creating chaos just to fulfil that ambition.

After all, he could de-register Umno just to stay in power. Imagine what he won’t dare to do to get his son, Mukhriz, to be Umno president.
